As the world works towards meeting the growing energy demands while maintaining security, energy independence and environmental protection, many industry participants are turning towards cleaner sources of energy. Some are looking at better ways of utilizing existing supplies of power producing material like coal and natural gas and others are embracing alternatives such as renewable energy technology. While the future landscape for the energy industry has yet to be determined it appears that a diversified portfolio of cleaner and safer means for the production of electricity is a realistic expectation.
According to Clean Edge’s 09 report, which has been tracking the growth of clean-tech markets for nearly a decade, the global revenues for solar photovoltaics, wind power, and biofuels expanded from $75.8 billion in 2007 to $115.9 billion in 2008. For the first time, one sector alone, wind, had revenues exceeding $50 billion. New global investments in energy technologies — including venture capital, project finance, public markets, and research and development — expanded by 4.7 percent from $148.4 billion in 2007 to $155.4 billion in 2008, according to research firm New Energy Finance.
Recent developments have cast a cloud over the renewable energy business. The capital markets have turned risk-averse, making financing for alternative energy hard to come by. The clean energy sector faces considerable challenges moving forward.
Facing the global financial crisis, most countries announce the implementation of initiative projects to stimulate the economy. As for China, 2009 will be a pivotal turning point in terms of clean energy sector. The government is planning a large scale energy renaissance scheme. The total investment will exceed 200 Billion RMB. For instance, China is aiming at 100 GW wind power capacity by 2020 and expand its renewable energy consumption to 40% of the energy market by 2050. The new goal for wind power capacity is more than three times of the 30 GW target that the government set 18 months ago. According to a forecast by Global Wind Energy Council, China will also become the biggest growth market for wind power generating capacity in 2009, ahead of the US.
Clean Energy Trends Asia 2009 is a Two-Day Strategic Event that will focus on the best and most effective trends on Clean Energy for the energy and utilities industries. It is aiming to accelerate the development of renewable energy, energy-efficiency technologies, and robust clean energy markets in China, Asia, and the world.
